Fresh solutions for a better Bozeman.
John Meyer is running for Mayor to make Bozeman the most sustainable town on the planet. As an environmental attorney, trained biologist, and community activist, John has the skills necessary to protect the people, natural environment, and neighborhood character of Bozeman.
John is a husband, father of twins, and long-time resident of Bozeman.
A PROVEN TRACK RECORD
During John’s fifteen years of practicing law in Bozeman, he has:
Invalidated the construction permit for a $550 million coal railroad in southeast Montana.
Stopped dozens of old growth timber sales over 12 million acres of “critical habitat” for threatened species on public lands.
Prevailed on several cases in the Montana Supreme Court that have protected Montanans’ right to ballot initiatives.
Drafted and defended Bozeman’s single-use plastics initiative.
John is actively working to address affordable housing and water adequacy, two of the most important local issues facing Bozeman.
In November 2025, Bozeman residents should vote YES! on the Water Adequacy and Residental Development (WARD) ballot initiative. John drafted this initiative with help from Bozeman locals. When passed, the initiative will require 1/3 of most new developments in Bozeman with three units or more to be affordable. Learn more.
My Priorities
-
John was the lead attorney on the Bozeman local ballot initiative that was passed by 63% in November 2024 to regulate single use plastics. The initiative will go into effect in 2026 if a jury decides single-use plastics infringe upon Montanans’ right to a clean and healthful environment.
John is currently prosecuting the Yellowstone Club for violating the Clean Water Act. He was arrested for walking up a river and watching a contractor take water samples.

The status quo is not sustainable. As the cost of living increases, more and more people are being pushed out of Bozeman. Exacerbating the cost of living problem is the cost of renting or purchasing a new home. Young professionals and families cannot afford to live in the town where they work. John is actively working to change that.
John Meyer lives in an affordable housing development in Bozeman. As a veteran ballot initiative attorney, John worked with Bozeman residents to draft the WARD ballot initiative, which will require 1/3 of all new developments of 3 units or more to be affordable.

The current Bozeman City Commission has failed to address the fact that Bozeman voters do not want or need more luxury housing.
City planning should prioritize overwhelming public interests over individual developer interests which promote real estate speculation.
Learn more about my work to require luxury development to build affordable housing here.

The City of Bozeman has said we will have water shortages in the next ten years. Water conservation is a step in the right direction but does not confront the primary offender: unchecked and rampant development. By prioritizing how we allocate our water resources, the city can ensure our water rights' are protected.
I worked with Bozeman residents to draft the Water Adeqaucy ballot initiative, which will ensure luxury developers construct affordable housing for people that work here.

Public transportation is an important way for Bozeman to reduce tailpipe emissions. I’ll work to ensure the City of Bozeman partners more closely with the Human Resources Development Council to increase the range and frequency of where buses travel. If we’re going to tackle climate change, public transportation should be readily available to everyone. The network of bus lines should encourage ridership and by moving efficiently and consistently throughout the entire community and surrounding area.
My Vision
I am working to make Bozeman a model community for the rest of the world. Everyday I meet and work with people from diverse backgrounds to grow and protect our common values.
The Bozeman voters I talk with do not want more unaffordable luxury housing. Our planet does not need more vacation houses. I am working to create affordable housing for people that work in Bozeman. If you work in Bozeman, you should be able to live here.
Bozeman residents should be able to easily walk or bike to the nearest grocery store. We need to expand our public transportation system, including a bus route from downtown Bozeman to the airport.
Bozeman’s energy needs should be completely supplied by renewable energy. We will increase rooftop solar systems and end our dependence on fossil fuels.
